Reducing carbon emissions with 1E

1ethelondonpaper051006 Brief

1E, a leading provider of Windows management solutions, developed a product which enables the centralised power management of corporate PCs - NightWatchman. We were asked to communicate the environmental benefits of the product to IT trade as well as general media to help kick-off a broader sales push by the firm.

Solution

We commissioned the National Energy Foundation (NEF) to look at what businesses do currently to save energy, what the Government carbon emissions targets were and how much energy could be saved if UK businesses adopted NightWatchman. We established that there are about 10 million PCs in use in offices across the UK, and that 40% of the UK adult population regularly use a PC at work. Our consumer research showed that 18% of office PCs are never switched off at night and weekends, and a further 13% are not switched off on some days of the working week.

When we combined our research with NEF data we discovered that 1.5 billion kWh of energy was wasted by businesses, at a cost of £115m a year, with the level of carbon emissions which could be saved amounting to 700,000 tonnes, the same as the C02 emissions of 120,000 4x4 vehicles. We combined the data and conclusions into the ‘1E PC Energy Report’ which we used as the basis for targeted sell-in to trade and general IT titles as well as to the business and environment journalists.

Result

The ‘PC Energy Report’ achieved over 46 pieces of coverage including a half page in the Independent. Coverage has reached over 6 million people and has a PR equivalent value of £74.4K. Reports have also been distributed to key Government ministers and bodies and medium-large corporations across the UK.
